At the time that the last railroads north of the Rio Grande were completing the retirement of their steam power in the early spring of 1960, hundreds of "Locomoturas de vapor" were still in daily service on the National Railways of Mexico. All of them were built in the USA. The last of N de M's 4-8-0s to operate, No. 3002, was also the final example of her wheel arrangement to run in North America. The big twelve-wheeler was about to leave the Valle de Mexico engine terminal to haul a local freight northbound in July, 1964.
